Since a young age, being physically active has always been a part of my identity. Whether on a sports field or court, out in the forest hiking, or riding my bike across the city, I was always on the move. As a sophomore in high school, I was able to select a weight training course to earn my physical education credit. That class is where I learned to use the various machines and free weights, as well as the basic techniques of how to lift properly. Little did I know that a decade down the road, that basic introduction into fitness would blossom into a passion that has helped me not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.
At the age of 28, I made the conscious decision to give up alcohol and change my life for the better. In doing so there was a huge void that needed to be filled and that’s where fitness reappeared in my life. I joined a local gym, began training five days a week and immersed myself into gaining knowledge from books, fitness magazines, social media and competent gym goers. I fell in love with the day-to-day grind and the level of consistency it took to yield the results I was hoping to obtain. What I wasn’t counting on was how much these actions played a role in lowering my anxiety and stress levels, as well as curving my depression and giving me a sense of self-worth.
Though I’m the one who made the decision to chase something better for myself, exercise and physical activity gave me a path to do so.
